Friday Date Night Dance Class Learns How To Cha Cha Cha to Aretha Franklin’s ‘I’m Every Woman’

Friday Date Night Ballroom Dance Class, held at the 1st Presbyterian Church 3810 Grissom Pkwy, has been active for years.  On any given Friday evening, 7 o’clock sharp, many of Myrtle Beaches couples and singles get together for ballroom dance instruction.

Tonight we learned a Cha Cha move that I picked up at the Fred Astaire Studios, the Triple Turn.  The class always begins with the basic, so, if you are a beginner, new to the class, you are introduced to step #1.  The advanced students are given an assignment (tonight, a variety of underarm turns), and then we try it with the music.  Since we are featuring the songs of Aretha Franklin during the month of September, we did the Cha Cha Cha to ‘I’m Every Woman’ – a nice even tempo tune.

Everybody likes to Waltz and about half way through class we start a new subject.  In the past weeks our focus was on the Rumba Open Cuban Walk and we put some emphasize into a step known as the Cross Body Lead.  I decided to continue the topic and introduce the pattern as a Waltz figure.  Remember the Cross Body Lead is a connector step, design to lead into other patterns. We used it to link three different movements, first the Left Rock Turn Pivot, then the Arthur Murray Turn and finally to the Left Inside Underarm Turn to the Open Break (commonly used in the Viennese Waltz).

Judy, one of our dancing gals brought in a half a dozen fancy beaded ball gowns for the ladies to try on and the group class wrapped up with a fashion show.  Another great Date Night Group Class.

I want to learn how to Cha Cha too!
